“Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region” (Luke 4:14).
“And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing’” (Luke 4:20–21).
More Songs for the New Year 5784
Pete is writing songs specifically for this time of year. Two weeks ago, he released a soaking song for Rosh Hashanah expounding on the goodness and greatness of God. Then for the Day of Atonement (Sept. 25), he wrote a song called “Let There Be Nothing.”
He will release another song this Friday at the start of the Feast of Tabernacles. A link isn’t available yet, but you can subscribe to his YouTube channel and be notified when the song is available (a link will also be posted on my Facebook page).
Coming Out in the Power of the Holy Spirit
As noted above, we have just come through the Day of Atonement (Sept. 25). It was on the Day of atonement that Jesus came out of the wilderness after forty days of preparation and testing. His coming forth is described as returning “in the power of the Spirit to Galilee” (Luke 4:14).
This is what the Lord wants for each of us. He wants us to not just be baptized or filled with the Holy Spirit, but for us to also be able to move in the Spirit’s power.
This happened for Jesus because He said “no” to each and every temptation of the devil. We need to do the same.
But on the other hand, we all know too well that we are weak and imperfect and often don’t say “no” to the devil and the wrong things. We’re all too aware of iniquities and strongholds in our lives.
But there is no reason to despair or to be negative. Jesus died for our sins. Not only did He pay the penalty for our acts and deeds of sin, but our iniquities (weaknesses and propensities for sin) were also placed on Him. Yes, our iniquities, propensities to sin, and wrong choices were placed on Him and carried away so we could be set free! Isaiah 53:6 states, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
This is pictured clearly on the Day of Atonement. The high priest laid his hands on a goat and confessed the sins of the whole nation. That goat was then led away into the wilderness. Those sins and iniquities were carried far, far away. That is what Jesus did for us so we could be set free. Leviticus 16:22 reads, “The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.”
For the past several years, whenever I happen to be leading or speaking in a meeting around the Day of Atonement, I have found it important to remind people clearly that Jesus has carried away their sins and iniquities. I often ask them to write down those sins or struggles on a piece of paper and then bring them to the front. (We did this in our meeting in Malaysia two nights ago.) After they bring that list to the front, they tear it up and thank Jesus for carrying and removing those weaknesses, griefs, and iniquities. Psalm 103:12 says, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” And in every meeting when they do this, it seems people receive deliverance and a breaking of bondages. Hallelujah. That is why Jesus came and died for us.
This freedom is cause for great rejoicing. But I think it’s equally important to take a step further. Know that you can now move in the power of the Holy Spirit just as Jesus did, and this is for us right where we live. Note that Jesus first returned to Galilee and to Nazareth, his hometown.
He didn’t go first to some exotic place and then come back after He was famous. No, first He went to His hometown. To me that’s exciting. The most difficult place can be our hometown. But that’s exactly where the Lord wants to first use us. Be confident, just as Jesus was. In fact, on the first Sabbath after He emerged from the wilderness, He publicly read Isaiah 61:1–2 about healing the sick and setting people free and announced that He would now do that in fulfillment of that prophecy. Something like that is what He has for each and every one of us, His ekklesia.
Heal the sick; set people free. Be blessed!
Thanks for praying,
Ron and Teddy
