“When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, He said to them, ‘Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.’ And they ridiculed Him. But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. And the report of this went out into all that land” (Matt. 9:23–25).
The Lord Will Make You an Influencer
The Lord began speaking this during MPP. He wants us to be influencers so that His influence through us spreads further and further—blessing and helping people—just as ripples keep spreading out when a rock splashes into the water.
To be an influencer may sound daunting, but it really is what Jesus told Peter and Andrew and the others: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19). They could keep on being catchers of fish, but at the same time God would also use them to influence others to turn onto the highway to know the Lord.
So to become an “influencer,” one must first make the decision to follow the Lord, as Peter and Andrew had done. But sometimes there is another key—we must drive out any mocking or scornful spirit, like we see in the story of the father of the girl who had died.
The girl’s father came to Jesus asking Him to come to his home and resurrect her. This decision was akin to what Peter and Andrew had done earlier. We could say this father had “made his decision to follow Jesus.” However, when he arrived back home with Jesus and His disciples, he and his wife were confronted by this mocking spirit.
On entering the house, Jesus had said to these so-called friends who had come to mourn the dead girl that she wasn’t dead but only “sleeping.” True friends would have been excited to hear the possibility of hope after all. Even if they couldn’t believe for themselves, you would think they would respect any chance for reprieve or help for the father and mother. But the scriptures say they mocked and scorned Jesus. It wasn’t just a temporary expression of unbelief, but a deliberate attempt to belittle and mock Jesus (and those who would follow or believe in Him, like this father obviously was doing.)
Jesus didn’t argue or try to convince them or win them to His side. He knew they were being influenced by mocking spirits. He simply had them removed from the house. He told them to leave and then had the door shut on them. Then in privacy—and only with Peter, James, and John accompanying Jesus—the parents received their daughter back to life. Satan has hosts of mocking spirits to hinder and discourage. We can’t ignore them, but must drive them out. Then we will see miracles.
Today, many, many people are hungry for more of the Lord. They want to be used by Him. But know Satan will send mockers and scorners. We need to firmly shut the door on them. Then miracles will happen and the good news will spread.
Thanks for praying,
Ron and Teddy
