“Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: … ‘See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant’” (Jer. 1:9–10).
Time to Build—Power of the Prophetic
We are in the ninth Hebrew month, and one of the themes has to do with prophetic strategy. I love Jeremiah 1:9–10, which emphasizes the incredible authority and power released when we prophesy. This scripture points out that prophecy has the ability to attack and destroy iniquitous structures and strongholds (i.e., root out, pull down, destroy, and throw down). Every time Jeremiah prophesied to Judah or any other nation God sent him to, and regardless of the exact wording or content of the message, his prophesying actually was rooting out, pulling down, and destroying Satan’s work. That is why God called him and then sent him. He was to prophesy what God told him to, and as he did, the anointing of the Lord would attack wicked and demonic strongholds. The words and message of the prophecy may not have said it, but each time he prophesied, the power of God was being released to attack darkness, the demonic, and sin.
The other reason God was sending Jeremiah to the nations to prophesy was “to build and to plant” (1:10). This might not be readily apparent to us, because it seems that none of the nations Jeremiah prophesied to ever repented and were subsequently destroyed. But the truth is that whenever he prophesied, the word of the Lord was being released, and according to Hebrews 4:12 it is “living and powerful.” Somehow life was being released. Every time Jeremiah prophesied, something was being built up; something was being planted.
We must remember those exact two things happen when we prophesy today. There is a destroying of darkness, the demonic, and sin. This is great news, because hidden strongholds (that we don’t know about and which they don’t know about) are targeted and attacked whenever we prophesy over people, businesses, or regions. Likewise, there is a building up and a planting. Every time we prophesy, God builds and plants something. It may be a long time before we recognize it, but something good is released.
I must point out two more important things from the text: “Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: … ‘See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms.’” First, the Lord touched Jeremiah’s mouth and then said he had authority. We can take this to mean that when we prophesy, the authority works. If we choose not to prophesy, then the authority doesn’t operate.
The second is connected to the idea of nations and kingdoms. God wants us to prophesy over our cities and nations. When we do, the kingdom of darkness operating in that city, nation, or business is attacked. Likewise, when we prophesy, the kingdom of God is planted and is built up.
Thanks for praying,
Ron and Teddy
